10 Easy English Activities for Kids at Home (Ages 4–10)
👋 Introduction
Teaching English at home doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Whether you’re a parent in Japan or anywhere else in the world, these 10 fun and easy English activities will help your child (ages 4–10) build confidence and vocabulary—right from the living room!
All you need is 10–15 minutes a day and a few basic tools (some are free to download!).
1. ✏️ Alphabet Tracing with Phonics Sounds
Print a worksheet with large letters (A–Z). As your child traces the letters, say the sound out loud:
“A is for apple. /a/ /a/ apple!”
🧠 Tip: Use our free tracing sheet from Brainy Bloom Club’s starter pack!
2. 🎨 Color-by-Word Activities
Create or download images where each section has an English word like “blue,” “sun,” or “tree.” Kids must match the word to the color.
🖍️ Great for visual learners and early readers!
3. 🧩 Flashcard Matching Game
Use printable flashcards with words and images. Place cards face down and let your child find matching pairs (e.g., word “dog” and picture of dog).

4. 🎵 Sing a Phonics Song
YouTube is filled with simple phonics songs (like “ABC Phonics Song” or “Jolly Phonics”). Let your child sing along while pointing to letters on the page.
🎧 Bonus: Create a mini karaoke time with lyrics on screen!
5. 🗣️ Word of the Day Wall
Each day, choose one new word (e.g., apple, run, happy). Print it out or write it on paper and stick it on the wall. Use it in 3–4 sentences that day.
🧱 Build a “word wall” over the month!
6. 🎲 Dice & Action Verbs Game
Roll a dice. Each number is linked to an English verb:
1 = jump, 2 = clap, 3 = run, etc.
Say the word, and the child must act it out!
💡 Movement boosts memory retention—great for kinesthetic learners.
7. 🧸 Toy Talk Time
Let your child pick a favorite toy. Pretend the toy speaks English:
“Hi! I am Teddy. I like cookies!”
Encourage your child to respond in simple phrases.
🐻 This builds storytelling and confidence.
8. 🎯 Find the Object (Scavenger Hunt)
Say: “Find something red!” or “Bring me something that starts with B!”
This encourages vocabulary + listening skills.
🏃♂️ Add a timer for extra excitement!
9. 🎭 Mini Role Play (Grocery Store, Doctor, etc.)
Set up pretend scenes:
- Grocery Store: “How much is the banana?”
- Doctor: “What’s your name? How do you feel?”
👨⚕️ Real-world phrases that stick!
10. 📚 Story Time + English Words
Read a short book and pause to ask:
“What’s this?” or “Can you say this word with me?”
Even Japanese books with a few English inserts work well.
📘 Bonus: Use picture books with simple text to introduce sight words.
💡 Final Tip for Parents
You don’t need to speak perfect English to teach your child.
Just being consistent—and making it fun—is more important.
Start with just one activity a day and watch their language bloom 🌸
