The main buying question has changed: LEGO ended company sales of the SPIKE portfolio on 30 June 2026. Existing sets remain usable, but a new purchase now needs a clear plan for support, spare parts and the years you expect to teach with it.

Already own a working set? Keep using it if it meets your learning goals. Starting a new programme? Compare supported alternatives and total ownership costs before buying remaining stock or a used set. Retirement does not make the learning activities worthless, but it changes the investment case.
According to LEGO’s official retirement notice, SPIKE App support continues until 30 June 2031. During that period LEGO plans bug fixes and compatibility updates, not new features. Its current notice also says SPIKE remains eligible for FIRST LEGO League through the 2027–2028 season. Verify the rules for your specific event before committing a team budget. What the Platform Is Designed to Teach
SPIKE Prime combines reusable building elements, a programmable hub, motors and sensors. Learners can design a mechanism, write instructions, observe its behaviour and make improvements. That physical feedback can make an abstract coding idea easier to discuss: a robot stopping too late gives the group a concrete debugging problem.
The learning value depends on the task. Following a model exactly can introduce parts and procedures, but copying instructions alone does not demonstrate engineering understanding. Add a constraint, such as moving a lightweight object a short distance, and ask children to explain why they chose a particular mechanism.
The official SPIKE Prime lesson collection is a useful starting point for planning. Preview a complete lesson yourself, including setup, charging, cleanup and saving. Do not assume that the activity time shown is the total time required for an inexperienced class.
Check the Exact Set, Not Just the Name
Used listings, expansion sets and classroom bundles are not interchangeable. Ask for an inventory and clear photographs of the hub, motors, sensors, charging connection and building elements. Confirm which parts belong to the seller’s bundle rather than assuming every SPIKE-labelled box contains a complete starter system.
- Can the hub charge, connect and run a short programme?
- Do the motors turn and the sensors produce readings?
- Are cables, the battery and important connectors present and undamaged?
- Is the seller offering a return period or a meaningful warranty?
- Can you obtain replacements locally at a reasonable delivered cost?
A low sticker price is not a bargain if one missing component prevents the planned lessons. Ask the seller to demonstrate the exact unit, especially when buying second-hand. Do not accept a video of a different set as proof of its condition.
Device Compatibility and Coding Progression
Check the current SPIKE App requirements against the exact computer or tablet you intend to use. Operating-system support, Bluetooth permissions, school device restrictions and software installation rights all matter. “Works with tablets” is not enough information for a purchase decision.
For a beginner, start with a short block-based sequence and one observable outcome. More advanced learners may use the platform’s Python resources, but robotics APIs are not identical to every desktop Python library. A transition to text coding still needs teaching: indentation, variables, error messages and hardware commands do not explain themselves.
Before ordering multiple sets, run a pilot with the school’s actual devices and network policies. Test connecting, saving, reopening and running a project. A teacher should know how to recover from an interrupted connection without losing the whole session.
When Keeping SPIKE Makes Sense
An existing fleet can still be a useful resource when it is working, staff know the platform and planned lessons fit its capabilities. Replacing every set immediately could consume money better spent on teacher preparation, accessible materials or additional teaching time.
Maintain a simple inventory, label sets, charge batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions and record faults. Keep a small collection of tested lessons and a documented fallback when one hub is unavailable. Pair work can help, provided both learners take meaningful turns building, programming and explaining.
When to Compare Alternatives
A new multi-year programme should compare platforms on educational fit, expected support, repairability, device needs, curriculum resources and staff training. A club interested mainly in introductory coding might not need a robotics purchase yet. A teenager interested in open-ended electronics may prefer a microcontroller-based route with appropriate supervision.
Competition participation is another separate decision. A robotics kit does not include team registration, coaching, a challenge set, transport or entry fees. Work backwards from the event requirements and the learners’ goals rather than buying first and hoping a pathway appears.
A Practical Purchase Decision
Write down three projects the learners will actually complete, the devices available, the adult support required and the total local price. Include spare parts, storage, staff preparation and any competition costs. Then compare that plan with using equipment you already own.
